Sports Massage Therapy

Sports Massage uses a mix of Holistic / Swedish massage techniques, combined with deep tissue massage. The deep tissues massage techniques are designed to improve the suppleness and flexibility of muscles, the underlying tissues and the joints. Hence, sports massage can prove beneficial to individuals who do not participate in any form of sport.

Typically sports massage is applied prior to activity (pre event) or after activity (post event). Pre event sport massage tends to be somewhat vigorous in nature and is designed to warm the muscles, joints and underlying structures in preparation for the actual event. Besides the physiological effects of pre event sports massage one can also experience psychological effects. The psychological affect can prove beneficial in terms of performance, especially if pre event massage is part of the athlete’s normal preparation routine prior to an event. Post event sports massage tends to be applied much more rhythmically and slowly and is aimed at soothing and relaxing tired muscles after strenuous activity.

Some of the associated benefits of sports massage are it can:-

  • Aid recovery (post event)
  • Improve performance
  • Physiologically & psychologically prepare an athlete (pre-event)
  • Increase circulation
  • Increase flexibility
  • Increase mobility
  • Reduce the chance of injury
